Standard 3: Plan for and Implement Effective Teaching and Learning
Reflective Commentary:
In order that my teaching is effective and connects with a diverse group of students, I strive to implement lessons which incorporate a range of teaching strategies, challenge students, are thoroughly planned and caters for individual interests and capabilities. I planned teaching programs effectively through constructing play based hands on approach, constructing achievable goals, integrating ICT in my programs, using a range of different resources, providing engaging and creative and fun lessons and involving parents with student learning and in my program. This is an area that I feel I do well in a lot of ways, but I still think I need improving and finding more resources and different teaching strategies I can use that is beneficial in my teaching and learning.

Situation:
As educators it is essential to implement and review the effectiveness of our learning and teaching programs in order to develop an effective, beneficial and supportive program to develop students knowledge and understanding skills. Working with other staff to review, modify and enhance knew knowledge about teaching strategies is important because it helps you understand new skills and ideas that you can use in your classroom and in your teaching. One thing that I think is important and extremely beneficial for student's learning is establishing programs that involve parents/carers in the education of their children. This is beneficial because by having more contact with parents, teachers learn more about students' needs and home environment, which is information they can apply toward better meeting those needs.

Action:
For a learning programme to engage and secure the meaningful participation of as many students as possible, it must be planned, carefully structured and sequenced in such a way as to transport students comfortably from what they already know, understand and have experienced, into new educational territory which challenges and extends them. When planning lessons to cover the outcomes I make sure that I cover the students interests, what they may have learnt so far, what they might already know about the topic, and how I can enhance their learning on that particular outcome. My aim of an effective learning and successful program is for students to have acquired a sense of competency and self-sufficiency with respect to a particular subject, topic and skill.
In my professional practicum I found that I was using the same kinds of teaching strategies and types of lessons over and over. I feel I improved on this in areas such as science, maths and literature later on my practicum. I made sure that each session was approached in a different way and were taught using different strategies. Science was one of the areas which I enjoyed teaching this is because I could think outside the box, have creative, fun and engaging activities and experiments for children to do and also being able to have an effective play based and hands on approach activities and lessons.
Below are photos of my different teaching strategies and different resources I used to carry and enhance science learning.

When deciding which materials to use and what kinds of activities to set for my Units of work. I endeavour to choose those that will be meaningful and authentically engage students. Where possible I select those materials that might best connect with students’ life worlds. I used a wide variety of teaching resources and integrated ICT through the use of music, cameras's, smart board activities, youtube videos and songs to enhance and and have an engaging and creative lesson for my students. For example I had to teach students about the seasons and I made sure that I used different resources and not just a worksheet material. The different resources that I used in this lesson were:
Below are some photo evidence of the different resources I have used for my season lesson with my pre primary class on my professional practicum. (Click on the different numbers to see the next photo)
- Posters on the seasons for the students to have a look at and see what people are wearing in that particular season, what is happening in that season in the environment, what colours do we so more often, how the weather is changing etc.
- Whiteboard to write describing words on each seasons.
- Art Creative materials I decided instead of students painting or colouring in what happens to the tree in each season, I would use different coloured paper for students to put on the tree trunks to show me if they have the understanding of what colours are being used and what is happening to the tree and the tree leaves.
- Smart board to play a short movie on seasons- the children loved it and came up with so many different describing words about each season.
- Season Song this resource helped students to be able to sing the song to allow then to understand the season order

Outcome:
I was really happy with my effective teaching and learning in this standard, I tried to cover all the standard points in 'Plan for and Implement Effective Teaching and Learning' and am very happy with my mentor teachers feedback and how my students responded and how well they were engaged and were motivated. Having different teaching strategies and different resources in your actives and lessons, always allow students to be more interested and engaged in the lesson. Using the same teaching strategy and resources will often have students lacking motivation and will get distracted very easily. I made sure that all my teaching and learning and my programs for my pre primary classroom were effective, creative, engaging and catered for all students with different abilities in my classroom.

Action Plan:
In my future teaching I would like to have incursions and excursions, I wanted to have an excursion/ incursion on my professional practicum but however was not allowed to do due school policies etc. I would need to make sure that I know the schools policies before I do any planning for attending an excursion this will allow me to gain the importance of understanding the rights and responsibilities related to the teaching role, medical behaviour management and risk management policies and my duty of care obligations when I am to plan and organise an incursion or an excursion in my own classroom.
To improve my skills in his standard of achievement I wish to intend and gain more knowledge on different creative resources I can use in my tacking and different softwares and programs I can use in ICT in my classroom. I have found a website that I can use to help me gain my ICT knowledge and how to use different softwares and programs to enhance my professional teaching strategies.
